Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli admits 'mistake' in leaving Premier League

Balotelli: English football is 'beautiful'
Mario Balotelli admits it was a "mistake" to leave England – and is targeting another Champions League winners medal with new club Liverpool.
Balotelli completed his move to Anfield from AC Milan on Monday evening and was at the Etihad Stadium to watch Liverpool lose to his former side, Manchester City.
Mario Balotelli says he did not expect to be welcomed so warmly by the Liverpool fans.
And the Italy striker – who spent two-and-a-half seasons with City before returning to Serie A - is happy to be back in the Premier League, calling English football "beautiful".
"I'm happy to be back because I left England, and it was a mistake," Balotelli told the Liverpool website. "I wanted to go to Italy but I realised it was a mistake.
"English football is generally better. English football is beautiful.
“I want to win another Champions League for sure, because the Champions League (with Inter in 2010) wasn't all mine, I was in a team. I want to take this team to the Champions League."
"I'm happy to be back because I left England, and it was a mistake. I wanted to go to Italy but I realised it was a mistake."
Mario Balotelli
Balotelli was sent off at Anfield in November 2011 while playing for City and says he is pleased to have the chance to be a hero on Merseyside.

"I didn't expect (the positive reception) because I've always been playing against Liverpool," he said. "Whenever I played against Liverpool, the fans weren't nice with me but that's normal - it's football.

"Now that I play for Liverpool, I can see the expectation in people. They're very happy and that makes me very happy at the same time. To play here for Liverpool excites me, but if you're an opponent it's difficult."

"Liverpool are one of the best teams here in England. The football is very good here. It's a great team with young players, and that's why I came here."

Balotelli, who is expected to make his debut for the Reds against Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday, also bid an emotional farewell to AC Milan via his Instagram account.
"I am about to begin a new chapter but first I have to thank Milan fans that have always shown incredible loyalty and great trust in me.
"I also want to thank all the staff members that have always supported me and have always shown extraordinary patience throughout my whole stay at Milan.
"The biggest thank you goes to my team-mates, who have put up with me on and off the pitch, as only my family are able to do.
"I will always appreciate your camaraderie, I have learned so much from all of you.
"I leave Milan with sadness, but know that I will still make you all proud going forward. Forza Milan! Thank you Milan!"
Balotelli scored 30 goals in 54 games for Milan after joining the Italian giants from City in January 2013.

Transfer news: Leicester sign Esteban Cambiasso on one-year contract

Esteban Cambiasso: Won Champions League with Inter
Leicester have signed Argentina international midfielder Esteban Cambiasso.
The 34-year-old, who was a free agent after leaving Inter, joins the Premier League newcomers on a one-year contract.
Cambiasso spent a decade with Inter and was part of the side that won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho in 2010.
Once part of the famous Real Madrid squad featuring Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and David Beckham, Cambiasso has been capped by Argentina more than 50 times.
He is known for one of the most memorable World Cup goals in recent times - scored for Argentina against Serbia and Montenegro in 2006 after a 25-pass move.
Cambiasso will wear the No 19 shirt at Leicester and could make his debut against Arsenal this weekend.

5 things a guy never wants to hear in bed

Sex

We have good days, bad days and ugly days. It’s really impossible to bring your A-game to every single romp session. That being said, sometimes some people say things that can hurt us. So ladies, if you want your man to be happy, never say these horrible things to them during, coitus:
An ex’s name
There’s nothing more demeaning than hearing another chef’s name while you’ve been toiling away in the kitchen. Ladies, do make sure you don’t scream out another guy’s name while bumping uglies. If you’ve trouble remembering names, just stick to the impossible-to-get wrong ‘Oh God’.
Is it in?
Most guys – thanks to porn – believe that they’re not too big in the penis department. It has given every guy the impression that a man can only give sexual pleasure if he is come equipped with a penis that looks like a third limb. Add to that a comment as demoralising as this and it’s enough to crush a guy’s self-confidence for life.
Can we try that position from __________(insert generic magazine’s name)
Okay, for some reason magazines of all ilk seem to believe that we’re all double-jointed balloons, as they bombard us with positions that are hard enough to get into, forget actually enjoying them. Getting and maintaining an erection is hard enough for most guys without having to stand on one leg while staying aroused. So ladies, stick to the basics and please don’t expect your guys to be yogic acrobats.
Is that it?
Okay, okay we’ve been told a million times that women get multiple orgasms but sometimes it’s not about quantity but quality. While we have no issues to try and extend the period we spend in bed including foreplay, there’s nothing more demoralising for a guy than to let him think he suffers from premature ejaculation. Ladies, he’s working hard to please you, give him a reward, not a slap!
Where’s our relationship going?
While men are not averse to having the talk, the last thing they want to hear during sex is what the future holds. Not only does it suggest the lady in question doesn’t have her mind on the task, but it’s enough to make your man lose his erection. There’s a time and place for the talk, it’s just not in the bedroom during coitus!

Champions League draw: Charlie Nicholas wants Arsenal to sign two players Striker and defensive midfielder could see

Gunners go all the way to final
Charlie Nicholas says Arsenal can go “all the way” in the Champions League – but only if they sign two more players in the transfer window.
Arsene Wenger’s side have been drawn in Group D with Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray and Anderlecht, but will have to play those six matches without their main centre-forward, Olivier Giroud, who has been ruled out until the New Year with an ankle injury.
Former Arsenal striker Nicholas says the tough nature of the group may prompt Arsene Wenger to go into the transfer market and sign another striker before Monday evening’s deadline.

Group D

  • Arsenal
  • Dortmund
  • Galatasaray
  • Anderlecht
And he says his former team can get to the final in Berlin on June 6 if they can also add a quality defensive midfielder.
He told Sky Sports News HQ: “Arsenal have been there for so long now that they tend to know how to take care of business, but the thing with Arsenal is they always seem to start the campaign well and never seem to finish strongly.
“You can’t have that again because Giroud is going to miss the entire six games. It will be interesting to see if he goes in for another centre-forward.
“Aaron Ramsey was suspended [against Besiktas] and will be back and Theo Walcott will be back fit in two or three weeks’ time so there is a lot of good news coming Arsenal’s way, but I still feel another holding midfielder and a striker would be absolutely perfect for Arsenal.
Jim White takes you through the draw for the British teams
“Arsene Wenger’s got a big decision to make. He’s got two or three days before the deadline to decide whether to go into the market or not. He tends to trust people and with this group he should be strong enough to be second or probably top.
“I would love to say he will [go into the market], but with the way Arsene tends to do things and with what he said yesterday, it told me he would be trusting of the current crop he has.
“You need options in football. Arsenal have lots of pace now and lots of power, but they don’t have a natural link-up centre-forward with Giroud being out of the team. I think that’s the missing link to give them more variety, rather than just out-and-out pace.
“Defensively, Arsenal are still vulnerable. We know they’ve got a lot stronger, but I still feel if they add one or two by Monday then I would be very confident they would go all the way.”

Here's what our other experts had to say about the draw for the Premier League teams

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on Group G - Chelsea, Schalke, Sporting Lisbon, Maribor
Jose Mourinho must be the luckiest out of the three other managers [of English teams], to have this group. Schalke, Sporting and Maribor are not the best teams in their country and also he doesn't have to fly five or six hours to Turkey or Russia. It’s a good group. Sporting have Nani but I don’t think that will make any difference. Sporting has not been champions for a number of years now. It’s a good club but it shouldn’t give Chelsea any problems. I think it will be comfortable for Chelsea. I can see Chelsea getting far – but you do need a little bit of luck with your knockout round draw and with injuries.
Didi Hamann on Group E - Bayern, Man City, CSKA Moscow, Roma
Out of the English teams, City got by far the worst draw. This is a tough, tough group and the icing on the cake is Roma. There are no gimmes in this group. I still think, with their squad, they’ve got the strength in depth to qualify out of this group but it could go to the wire. Sometimes you can qualify after four games but I don’t think that will be the case in this group. City have even got the chance to win the group, though. Last year they went to Bayern and beat them, that should give them tremendous confidence. Once you’ve qualified you want to make sure you win the group because it makes an awful amount of difference.
Alan McInally – Real Madrid, Basel, Liverpool, Ludogorets
Anfield has something about it on a European night and they’ve got it back again. Against Basel and Ludogorets at home, I’m expecting Liverpool to get six points, one win away from home gives you nine and a draw in another one is 10 points. I’d be disappointed for Liverpool if they don’t get 10 points, regardless of the Real Madrid game – and that will put them through. I hope Liverpool get out of the group and I’ll be disappointed for Liverpool fans if they don’t have a couple of great nights at Anfield again and progress behind Real Madrid.

Tottenham's Erik Lamela ready for Premier League lift off

After starring in Tottenham's 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers last weekend, hopes are high that Erik Lamela can finally fulfil his promise in a Spurs shirt. Ahead of the Super Sunday clash with Liverpool, Adam Bate looks at a talent ready to belatedly blossom in the Premier League...

Everyone agreed that Tottenham had acquired some fine players in the summer of 2013, but the notorious line that Spurs sold Elvis to buy the Beatles soon became a source of embarrassment. Not least because that cast young Erik Lamela as John Lennon, the most celebrated of the lot.
Instead, calf and back problems coupled with difficulties adapting to life in England meant his impact was minimal. To paraphrase Lennon’s withering assessment of Ringo Starr’s drumming, how could Lamela be one of the best in Europe when he wasn’t even the best at White Hart Lane?
The Argentine made just nine appearances in the Premier League last season totalling 327 minutes of action. Damningly, he made more starts in the club’s Europa League campaign. Thursdays were Lamela’s busiest night of the week and the source of his solitary goal to date in a Tottenham shirt.

Tottenham vs Liverpool

Eight shots and 145 completed passes. It wasn’t much to show for a £30million investment. Lamela was dispossessed more times than he successfully completed a dribble and managed to play a full 90 minutes just once in the Premier League last season. Naturally, it was in the 6-0 defeat to Manchester City.
And yet, the feeling persisted that Lamela was different. While former boss Tim Sherwood seemed more comfortable than most in openly criticising his own players, there was usually a different tone to his comments when it came to Lamela.
It would’ve been easy for Sherwood to make Lamela the poster boy for the problems he’d inherited. Instead he spoke of being impressed with his performances in training. “I think it is unfair because obviously he has not been fit so it has been hard to judge,” said Sherwood. “The price isn't his fault. He comes with a huge price tag but it is not Erik that sets that price.
“It is difficult to adapt to a different country, a different league and a different language as well but when you are suffering these niggles too it is disappointing for the lad. We signed him for the long-term and we are sure that in the end he will come good for Tottenham and be a crowd favourite here.”
Erik Lamela (11) provided the assist for two of Tottenham's goals in their win over QPR
It’s worth remembering that is precisely what happened to Lamela at Roma. After arriving amid the hype that came with a significant transfer fee, he succumbed to an ankle injury that prevented him playing until October. He finished his first season with four goals from 29 games and lingering memories of on-field spats with Stephan Lichtsteiner and off-field problems with Pablo Osvaldo.

Sprint King

Lamela's total of 59 sprints in the game against QPR was the most by any Spurs player since January.
It was his second season in Italy that saw Lamela emerge from his chrysalis. He was the fifth highest scorer in Serie A in his final year at Roma and by far the most exciting, creating more chances and having more successful dribbles than anyone else among the top 10. Roma coach Aurelio Andreazzoli called him “unstoppable” and he suddenly looked a player capable of anything.
Fitness way the key. Lamela not only survived the infamous tests of veteran coach Zdenek Zeman but he thrived – outperforming the rest of the Roma squad when it came to the 1000 metre interval training that comprised a series of such runs one after the other. “He could run for three hours,” said Zeman, who also praised his “talent, pace and technique”.

Return to fitness

To his credit, Sherwood recognised it would be folly to turn to Lamela when, in his words, “under-cooked” and succeeded in protecting the player. New boss Mauricio Pochettino seems equally aware that only when Lamela is confident in his fitness levels will Spurs fans see the best of him.
"It’s important Eriksen and Lamela feel free because they are creative players. You can put players like that in their shells. But they need the movement to be able to attack."
Mauricio Pochettino
After a pre-season in which his manager has already called his compatriot “an unbelievable player” that’s what we may now get. “He was very disappointed about last season but the past is the past,” said Pochettino. “We need him to look forward, believe in his skill and condition and work very, very hard. With confidence and time he will show his value.”
Firstly, there came a game-changing performance in the Europa League against AEL Limassol when he emerged from the bench to set up both goals in a come-from-behind win. Next he transferred that form to the Premier League with another fine performance against Queens Park Rangers last weekend – his most effective yet in a Spurs shirt.
Perhaps most encouragingly, Lamela looked fully fit. Not only did he complete the 90 minutes in a 4-0 win but the Premier League tracking data shows he made 59 separate high-intensity sprints, more than any team-mate. Indeed, you have to go back to a January win over Swansea to find a Spurs player to top that (Kyle Walker, 62).
Erik Lamela's touches by zone highlight his roaming role, while the dribble positions indicate his threat
Gone is the uncertain figure waiting for the chance to get in the game. Now Lamela is encouraged to find space and the touch map from the QPR game highlights the freedom he is enjoying. “It’s important (Christian) Eriksen and Lamela feel free because they are creative players,” said Pochettino. “You can put players like that in their shells. But they need the movement to be able to attack.”
In setting up two goals last weekend, Lamela has already overhauled his assists tally of his debut and is halfway towards the key passes count. The number of successful dribbles are now outweighing the number of times he is being dispossessed. It seems the corner has been turned.
Much like at Roma, instant karma just isn’t the way it works when it comes to Lamela. It seems it’s the second season when we really see the best of him. With a huge game on Sunday against Liverpool, the home of those Beatles, it’s time for the next test for the fabulous Erik Lamela.

Yaya Toure Ready to Return to Moscow, Says Manuel Pellegrini

London: Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini is confident Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure will play at CSKA Moscow later this season despite suffering racist abuse in Russia last term.
Toure was subjected to racist taunts by CSKA supporters when the clubs met in the Champions League and they will face off in the same competition once again after being pitted together in Thursday's draw.
Toure was furious with the abuse and even suggested black players could boycott the 2018 World Cup in Russia if the country did not get to grips with the issue.
CSKA were punished with a partial stadium closure by European governing body UEFA and sanctions were increased to full closure after a further offence in another match.
That means CSKA will be playing behind closed doors at the Khimki Arena in their first home match of this year's competition.
That punishment will have been served by the time City visit on October 21, but Pellegrini expects Toure to be prepared to play.
"He does not have a problem to go to Moscow," Pellegrini said.
"At that moment he said what he thinks about it and every one of us supports him because I don't think those things can happen on a football pitch. This year Yaya doesn't have a problem."
Asked if he had spoken to Toure about the matter, Pellegrini said: "I don't think it's important to continue the same thing.
"That happened last year and UEFA has rules not to allow to those things so I don't think it's good to continue with that."

Madrid: Vicente del Bosque unveiled a rejuvenated Spain squad on Friday after the debacle at this summer's World Cup and the retirement of three key players from the team's most successful era.
While stalwarts Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso and David Villa retired from international competition after Spain flopped in its world title defense, Del Bosque has also dropped mainstays Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina and Juan Mata.
The Spain coach named a squad that features four new faces for next Thursday's friendly in France and Spain's opening 2016 European Championship qualifier against Macedonia on September 8.
"This is a squad for the present but designed looking toward the future," Del Bosque said. "This is a special list given recent events. It comes after our poor showing at the World Cup, and we have to look ahead."
Atletico midfielder Raul Garcia, Valencia striker Pablo Alcacer, Athletic Bilbao defender Mikel San Jose and Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla all got their first calls.
Del Bosque also included Chelsea striker Diego Costa despite what the manager says is only a "knock" he had received in practice with his new club.
Spain won the 2010 World Cup and the European championship in 2008 and 2012. But the same core of players was overrun by the Netherlands and Chile in stinging losses to open this summer's World Cup.
Del Bosque described Spain's' failure to advance to the knockout rounds in Brazil as "a debacle, a disaster," but he said that it had not left any lasting damage inside the team and would not alter his commitment to Spain's possession-based playing style.
A total of eight players from Spain's World Cup squad were absent from the list.
Gerard Pique and Javi Martinez were unavailable because of injury.
Real Madrid right back Dani Carvajal and Bilbao holding midfielder Andre Iturraspe also made the squad. Both players have been called up by Del Bosque before but neither has debuted.
Spain now turns to rebuilding in the hopes it can defend its European title in 2016. Along with Macedonia in Group C, Spain will face Ukraine, Slovakia, Belarus, and Luxembourg.
"We have two difficult games ahead," said Del Bosque. "First we have France and then we want to start qualifying on a good foot against Macedonia."
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), David de Gea (Manchester United), Kiko Casilla (Espanyol)
Defenders: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid), Raul Albiol (Napoli), Juanfran Torres (Atletico Madrid), Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Mikel San Jose (Athletic Bilbao) Marca Bartra (Barcelona)
Midfielders: Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Jorge "Koke" Resurreccion (Atletico Madrid), Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Raul Garcia (Atletico Madrid), David Silva (Manchester City), Francisco "Isco" Alarcon (Real Madrid), Ander Iturraspe (Athletic)
Forwards: Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid), Paco Alcacer (Valencia)
