EPL Table & Results: Points Table and Team Standings at 2014-15 Barclays Premier League Week Five

The EPL results were quite surprising in the fifth week as table-toppers Chelsea had to be content with a draw against defending champions Manchester City. Former Chelsea player and all-time record holder Frank Lampard, scored the equaliser for Manchester City to play spoil-sport in Chelsea’s perfect start to the English Premier League season on Sunday. Despite the 1-1 draw Chelsea continues to lead the EPL table 2014-15.
Matchweek 5 of the Barclays Premier League 2014-15 season kick-started with Queens Park Rangers and Stoke City looking for their second victory of the season at the Loftus Road. However, Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton all faced defeats while Chelsea and Manchester City  played out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad.
Mame Biram Diouf scored his second goal in three matches to give Mark Hughes’ side the lead in the 11th minute. But Steven Caulker brought the home side back into the game with a header before half-time. Peter Crouch, who had assisted Diouf for the opening goal, got his name on the score-sheet to give Potters the lead once again. However, Nico Kranjcar stole the headlines following a brilliant free-kick in the 88th minute.
Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 3-0 at the Villa Park as the Gunners recovered from a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League last Tuesday. Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil, both scored their first goals of the season and even laid the for each other in the 32nd and 34thminute respectively. Aly Cissokho turned in Kieran Gibbs’ cross into his own net two minutes later to put the result of the game beyond any doubt.
Burnley and Sunderland played out a goalless stalemate while Newcastle United are still searching for their first win of the season after holding Hull City to a 2-2 draw. Nikica Jelavic and Mohamed Diame put the Tigers into the lead in the second-half but Papiss Cisse came to the rescue for Alan Pardew’s side with a brace of his own.
Meanwhile, Southampton extended their winning run in all competitions to four matches after edging Swansea City 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium. The Welsh club had Wilfried Bony sent off after picking up two bookable offences by match referee Jonathan Moss and the Saints took advantage of this in the second-half. Victor Wanyama came on as a substitute in the 69th minute to score the only goal of the game 11 minutes later.
But the shocker of the evening was at Upton Park where Liverpool were humbled 3-1 by a resilient West Ham United. The hosts stormed into a 2-0 lead within the first seven minutes courtesy of goals from Winston Reid and Diafra Sakho. Raheem Sterling halved the deficit after with a thundering effort before the half-hour mark. But Morgan Amalfitano sealed all three points for the Hammers, thus inflicting back-to-back league defeats to the Reds for the first time since last Decemeber.
Manchester United were expected to beat Leicester City at the King Power Stadium after humbling Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Old Trafford last Sunday. However, they were outfoxed by the Foxes as the result ended 5-3 in favour of Nigel Pearson’s men. The Red Devils raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Robin van Persie and Angel di Maria. Leonardo Ulloa headed his fourth goal of the season, much to the delight of the home crowd.
The second-half saw Man United attack with more intent and Ander Herrera restored the two-goal advantage after wrong-footing Kasper Schmeichel with a clever flick off Di Maria’s pass. But Leicester were motivated from that moment and won a penalty in the 62nd minute. Rafael da Silva was fouled by Jamie Vardy deep inside the Red Devils’ half but the referee was not interested and allowed play to continue.
The Brazilian right-back raced back towards Vardy, who went down at the slightest contact; and the referee, Mark Clattenburg obliged to give Leicester a penalty. David Nugent made not mistake from 12 yards and just two minutes later, summer arrival Esteban Cambiasso slammed home the equaliser; as a befuddled Louis van Gaal looked on from the bench.
That was not the end of the show as Leicester continued to dart forward and Vardy put his team into the lead for the first time in this match. Spurred by the cheers from the supporters, the Foxes were on the attack once again with Vardy holding Tyler Blackett aside to go through on goal. The Man Utd defender raced back and brought down the 27-year-old striker inside the box and was then shown a straight red card. Ulloa scored his second of the match from the penalty spot to seal all three points for the home side.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s winning run in the league came to a halt against reigning champions Manchester City after both teams played out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad. Andre Schurrle put Jose Mourinho’s side into the lead minutes after Pablo Zabaleta was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. But Frank Lampard’s equaliser earned a point for the Citizens and helped them avoid back-to-back defeats at home.
Tottenham Hostpur fell 1-0 to West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthrons with James Morrison scoring the only goal of the match. Everton suffered their second defeat of the season at Goodison Park after going down 2-3 against Crystal Palace. Romelu Lukaku had put the Toffees into the lead only for Mile Jedinak to cancel the advantage from the penalty spot.
Fraizer Campbell and Yannick Bolasie struck in the second-half to give the visitors a 3-1 lead as Leighton Baines pulled one goal back for Roberto Martinez’s men. However, the home side failed to find the equaliser and lost their second successive match at Goodison Park.
